Project

Home Page Design

Assignment ::
For this project, due at the beginning of class February 11th, sketch out on paper two different design grids for a home page for Portland Outdoor Recreation. Select one design grid and flesh out that design using Photoshop.

Design should reflect the content ideas listed in the provided creative brief and site map, follow your preferred grid sketch, and incorporate the required POR content. For this assignment, design only the home page of the web site. Only the top-level navigation elements listed on the site map need to be present in the site designs.

Resources ::
The following documents are available as reference:

You can alter the provided logo if you wish, or not use it at all and create one of your own liking.

Hints ::

  • Web designs need to be pixel-perfect, meaning that you must be careful in creating and aligning design elements. Designs that are not pixel perfect are often difficult to translate into HTML.
  • Always try to work at 100% in Photoshop so that every pixel of your page is visible (In Photoshop, select View > Actual Pixels).
  • Be sure to carry over the content grid you established in your site sketches. This grid guides the layout of all of your design objects, just like in print.
  • Include the file extension (.psd) when naming your file.

Requirements ::
Design Grid Sketches: Sketch out on paper two different design grids for the home page for Portland Outdoor Recreation. Be sure to do this before beginning the Photoshop designs. Sketches should present the design grid and navigation options of the site, and incorporate ideas and elements from the creative brief, site map and required content document. You'll be able to take your sketches home after class, so it's not necessary to make a copy of them to hand in. (10 points)

Photoshop Design Files: A home page design for Portland Outdoor Recreation showing the primary navigation elements, layout grid, color palette, copy treatment, and required POR home page content. Design should meet the criteria listed above, and be thoughtful of layout, style, and usability. Design should also take into consideration the features and limitations of web browsers and HTML. Bring to class your unflattened Photoshop files to save to the Data Drive at the beginning of class. (30 points)
